Rules & Regulations

THE AIM

The aim of the competition is to provide an opportunity for designers, especially higher institution students to enhance their creativity, ideas and innovativeness in designing universal design product for all with the application of Malaysian Standards (MS) in mind. It is hoped that with the usage of application of the MS, appropriate technology, new ideas and inventions by the participants, the competition will be able to generate interesting, good, safe and functional product to be utilized for all kinds of people, especially for the disable person, elderly and children development.

Malaysian Standard (MS) to be referred to:
·   MS 1184:2014 Universal Design And Accessibility In The Built Environment – Code Of Practice (Second Revision)
·   MS 1183:1990 Specification For Fire Precautions  In The Design And Construction Of Buildings Part 8 :  Code Of Practice For Means Of Escape For Disable People
·    MS 2015:2006 Public Toilet, Part 1 (2006): Minimum Design Criteria

The winners will be announced and invited to a Prize Giving Ceremony during International Conference on Universal Design In The Built Environment (ICUDBE 2017) on 6 & 7 November 2017.

THEME
INNOVATION PRODUCT DESIGN FOR ELDERLY AND PERSON WITH DISABILITIES (PwDs)

CONCEPT & PRINCIPLES OF UNIVERSAL DESIGN
(At least one must be incorporated in the idea & design of the product)
  1. Equitable Use
  2. Flexibility in Use
  3. Simple and Intuitive Use
  4. Perceptible Information
  5. Tolerance for Error
  6. Low Physical Effort
  7. Size and Space for Approach and Use

·    Category A – University/College Students (local university or college)
·    Category B – Design Professionals

Opening date: 15th September, 2017 (Friday)
Closing date: 15th October, 2017 (Sunday)

FEE
Registered participants of the Universal Design Product Competition (UDPC 2017) will be invited to the workshop and the admission is FREE.

ASSESSMENT
Assessment date by the judges:
                2nd November 2017 (Thursday)

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

The organizer has the right to appoint any jury to assess the participating entries and decisions made by the panel of jury are final. The assessment is based on:

  • Novelty of product (How novel is the idea or concept. Is the product unique?)
  • Inventiveness (Is the product innovative or modification of a similar existing product? Would it likely lead to a new product, system, design, material or process?)
  • Functionality (Fulfilling its intended functions, reliability and problem solving)
  • Universal Design Impact (Contribution of the design/invention on the needs for the disable person, elderly and children development)
  • Ergonomic & safety requirement (The interaction between user, product and environment; physically and psychologically) which follows the Standards Malaysia requirements.
  • Malaysian Standards (MS) application as reference (MS 1184:2014 Universal Design and Accessibility in the Built Environment - Code of Practice (Second Revision), MS 1183:1990 Specification for Fire Precautions in the Design and Construction of Buildings Part 8: Code of Practice for Means of  Escape for Disable People, MS 2015:2006 Public Toilets - Part 1 : Minimum Design Criteria)
  • Commercial Potentialities (market potential of the invention (is there any evidence of market need? Is the product/invention comparable or superior to similar product in the market?)
  • Presentation and Demonstration Quality (The whole idea/design/invention are presentable which qualify its designers to be awarded as the winner such as quality of its prototype/model, writing, sketches, drawing and verbal presentation/explanation.
RULES AND REGULATIONS

The organizer cannot be held liable and responsible for any damages, claims or lost of ideas before or after the competition. Design protection according to the Intellectual Property Rights Act: All participants are encouraged to register their designs under the Intellectual Property Rights Act and to keep all documents as proof of ownership before sending or exposing their design to the organizer.

Intending participants shall note that in many countries participation in competitions may constitute "disclosure" of their inventions or designs under their respective patent or design laws. Participants are advised to take the necessary action to ensure that their participations, if any, for the grant of patent or design rights not prejudiced by their participation in this competition. The organizers of UDPC 2017 shall not be liable for any forfeiture or any adverse effects to, any patent or design rights or any other intellectual property rights suffered by any participant due to his/her participation in UDPC 2017.
